Wilhelmenia I. Rembert, ​Temporary At-Large

​​​​​​​ Dr. Wilhelmenia I. Rembert serves as temporary At-Large member of the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners, appointed by the Board in March 2022.

Dr. Rembert has been engaged in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community for more than 30 years. She previously served as Vice-Chair of the Board of County Commissioners (2004-2006). She was also an At-Large member of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education (1999-2003), serving as Vice-Chair (2001-2002) and Chair (2002-2003).

Dr. Rembert brings a lifetime and career's worth of experience in education and social work to Mecklenburg County. She has served in a variety of leadership and teaching capacities at Winthrop University: Acting Dean, College of Education (1999-2000); Vice President of Graduate Studies (1994-2005); Chair of the Department of Social Work (1989-1994); Professor of Social Work (1979-2007); and licensed social worker. In addition, she served as N.C. Congressional District #9 Social Services Commission Representative (2007-2010); a member of the Central Piedmont Community College Board of Trustees (2013-2019); and as Head of School of Countryside Montessori School (2013-2016).

Outside of local government and education, Dr. Rembert has an extensive history of civic participation in our community. She currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Greater Enrichment Program, Inc. Board of Directors, and on the INLIVIAN Public Engagement Advisory Body (PEAB).

Over the years, Dr. Rembert has served on the Boards of the N.C. Institute of Political Leadership; Charlotte Housing Partnership; Charlotte Chamber of Commerce; Arts and Science Council; and the Family Center. She also served as a member of the Mecklenburg County Human Services Council; Mecklenburg County Juvenile Services Board; Mecklenburg Council on Adolescent Pregnancy; and the N.C. Democratic Party Executive Committee. She also worked with the U.S. Department of Commerce on the 2010 Census and 2020 Census.

Dr. Rembert holds a Bachelor of Arts in sociology from Winthrop University; a Master of Social Work from the University of South Carolina; and a Ph.D. in Child Development from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (the first in her family to earn a Ph.D.) Dr. Rembert has also pursued continuing education with the Management Development Program at Harvard University and N.C. Institute of Political Leadership.

Dr. Rembert is a native of Sumter, S.C. She is married to LeRoy "Jimmy" Rembert and has two married daughters and three grandsons.
